Division Awards

There are many hams within our great Division who deserve to be recognized for their achievements – and we'd like to recognize them. The following awards are offered by the Division:

Rocky Mountain Division Ham of the Year Award
The award is offered to recognize one of our deserving hams who has been an active participant of the ham community and who has contributed greatly to their ham community for the betterment of all of ham radio. Nominees must be over the age of 18.

Rocky Mountain Division Young Ham of the Year Award
This award is offered to recognize one of our deserving hams, age 18 and under, who has been an active participant of the ham community and who has contributed greatly to their ham community for the betterment of all of ham radio.

Rocky Mountain Division Technical Achievement Award
This award is offered to recognize a ham who has provided technical contributions for the betterment of our ham radio community. Some examples may include developing an operating mode, ham-related software application, electronic device for use in the ham community, publication of a technical effort in a ham publication, etc.

Recipients will receive a handsome plaque suitable for hanging in their shack.

Award Rules

1. Nominees for all awards must be ARRL members belonging to the Rocky Mountain Division (composed of the Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming sections).
2. Nominees of the Rocky Mountain Division Ham of the Year Award must be over the age of 18.
3. Nominees of the Rocky Mountain Division Young Ham of the Year Award must be age 18 or younger not later than the award nomination deadline to be eligible.
4. Fill out the attached nominating form completely.
5. You are required to supply documentation in support of your nominee’s qualifications. The more documentation you supply, the easier it will be for our judges to reach a decision.
6. Awards will be announced and presented at the Rocky Mountain Division Convention immediately following the close of nominations. If a recipient is unable to attend the Convention their plaque will be shipped to them.
7. The nomination deadline is April 1 of each year. Nominations and supporting documentation must be emailed or postmarked no later than April 1 to allow sufficient time for judging and the ordering of plaques. (See last page of nomination form for addresses)
8. Decisions of the judges are final.

Who are the Judges?

The Division awards judging panel consists of the Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming section managers along with one additional ARRL member residing in each of those sections. In the event of a tie for any particular award, the Division Vice-Director shall provide the tie-breaking vote.

2008 Division Award recipients We are pleased to announce our 2008 Division Award recipients: 2008 Rocky Mountain Division Ham of the Year: Darryl Hazelgren K7UT of Lehi, UT. Founder of the Great Salt Lake Contest Club, later to become the Utah DX Association. Active contester, and one who goes out of his way to teach hams how to become effective contesters. Active ARRL Utah Section DXCC card checker. Active on the air, having earned DXCC in 1968, with 315 counties currently worked (311 confirmed), ARRL DX Challenge Award recipient, 5 Band DXCC with 17 meter endorsement, and QRP DXCC. 2008 Rocky Mountain Division Young Ham of the Year: Phillip Shaw KE5LZX of Belen, NM Member of the Valencia County Amateur Radio Association (VCARA) and Amateur Radio Youth Association. Coordinator of ARRL Kids Day for VCARA. Constantly promotes amateur radio to youth, and enjoys contesting. 2008 Rocky Mountain Division Technical Achievement Award: Clint Turner KA7OEI of West Jordan, UT Technical contributions made towards the advancement of communications via 10 GHz as well as light (terahertz communications). Has developed ways to improve performance to the Montreal Doppler unit used within the direction finding community. Has developed several circuits for use in low frequency (LF) and medium frequency (MF) communications, including noise filters, beacons and more. Please take a moment to congratulate our recipients. They have been presented a gorgeous plauque to hang in their shack.
